Group Activities

ART GROUP

Our Art Group is a cozy little group for anyone who likes to express themself in painting or drawing. But it’s also a group for those who want to try something new and find new friends. It’s about coming together, chatting a bit and having fun!

We try to inspire and encourage each other! This is a way to find more energy, develop more imagination and improve creativity! To be more satisfied and happy!

We welcome everyone who is interested and we would be delighted to have new members! Come and share the joy with us!

You can choose whatever technique you like: watercolour, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, pencil etc. We provide our own supplies. We meet on alternate Mondays at 14.00-16.00. Your fee for the room will be 5 Fr per person.

BOOK GROUP

Members of the Book Group meet once a month to listen to a presentation and to discuss a book we previously chose together. One of the members makes the presentation, and together  we explore what makes the book special, what themes and values can be found in the story.

The books we program to read and discuss over the year are chosen in November. Narrative or non-fiction books can be suggested by the members, even poetry is on the agenda!

We normally meet on the third Tuesday of the month at Pestalozzi Hotel, from 10.00-12.00 o’clock. All IWCL members are welcome to join the meetings of the Book Group! Do you want to know the books planned for this year?  Feel free to contact Margarita or Hanneke.”

BREATHE, RELAX, FEEL

The goal I set myself in leading this group is to provide the basics of vipassana meditation (from which any mindfulness practice originates), experimenting in the group some different applications of it. In addition, several home practice instructions are provided. Among the many types of meditation, vipassana is a particular method of meditation oriented to the development of awareness in the here-and-now, through the observation of subjective experience as it presents itself in the present moment. At the moment the group is complete and above all has already experimented with various practices, so if you are interested in it, it is recommended to wait for the launch of a subsequent group.

COOKING GROUP

Each month we have a ‘guest chef’ from amongst our members. They prepare/teach us how to prepare the food that they love. We cook, eat and clear away together – it’s a wonderful evening of warmth, friendship, sharing and good food. The Cooking Group is open each month to ALL members – but book your place quickly as it’s a popular activity!

CULTURAL EVENTS

We live in a region which is rich in art, history and culture. So much to see, so much to do! It’s great to visit sites, museums and new places together as a group of friends from IWCL, and to have guided tours in English to help us to understand what we are seeing. Often, our visits are suggested and organised by members. We take the train together, or perhaps car-pool to closer destinations, take advantage of group-rate entry fees, and often eat lunch in beautiful restaurants!

DANCE GROUP

Everyone is welcome to join our IWCL Dance Group.

ENGLISH CONVERSION (Advanced)

Our Advanced English Conversation group meets every Monday morning from 10-11am, with alternating group leaders, both from Chicago.  We usually do a bit of grammar review, and then chat about a variety of subjects, including current events and issues, often including short readings, lyrics and poetry, as well as women’s issues and vocabulary games. We encourage taking off on spontaneous tangents.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION

Normally there is a different theme for discussion each week and we engage openly, sharing knowledge, opinions, and experiences on any number of current topics.

As British born and long-time resident of Switzerland, I have the privilege to host this delightful group of IWCL members.

Let’s Chat is open to all, but the level is generally quite advanced.  Please reach out to me for more information.

HIKE and CHAT

This group will meet at least once a month to explore the hiking trails of Ticino and possibly beyond while chatting about all manner of topics. The hikes will be roughly three hours in length and will include a picnic stop. Participants are kindly asked to pre-register, be equipped with appropriate walking attire (walking shoes, sunscreen, etc.) and bring a packed lunch and water. The goal is not only to hike but, as before, to openly engage, share knowledge, opinions, and experiences around a given theme. Please contact Maria to be included on the distribution list for information about forthcoming walks. Let’s getting hiking and chatting.

ITALIAN CONVERSATION

The beginner’s group is currently composed of 3 people and meets in Breganzona on Wednesday morning. We are also flexible, and can change the class day according to students’ schedules.

The goal of each meeting is to practise conversation as much as possible, with little guidance from my side. The level is basic but each stimulation is good to keep in touch with the Italian language, especially for people who have very few occasions to speak with the local population. Some grammar pointers are always present, but just as indications. It is also possible to create another little group of 2 or 3 beginners: just call me or send me a WhatsApp or email.

ITALIAN CONVERSATION – Intermediate Level; Eleonora Giraldi

Italian conversation: it sounds like an educational class, however it is considerably more than that. Our group is unique. We are friends coming from different backgrounds and parts of the world, who enjoy meeting once a week to share ideas, experiences, joyful moments, as well as concerns, ENTIRELY IN ITALIAN.

Sometimes we read articles and the discussions which stem from these will also satisfy grammar inquiries or explain expressions and idioms. We do not just learn a language; we learn a culture while learning about each other.

When I started being a group leader, I was unsure about the path I should follow. I had taught children before but never adults. However, the group was so welcoming and fun that I immediately felt at ease. Conversations started flowing and they have been flowing ever since.

Of course, the group size is fairly small and quite manageable, enabling each participant the chance to talk, read and ask questions during the hour long class. I hope that all of the ladies in my group enjoy and treasure this time as much as I do and I thank our club for giving me the opportunity to give, receive and share friendships and knowledge.

KNITTING GROUP –

Our group meets to knit and crochet together every two weeks on Monday afternoons between 14.30 and 16.30.

Everyone is welcome, from beginners to experienced knitters, we share our love of yarn and help with techniques and sourcing materials.

Check the newsletter for dates and please contact me if you are a new member of the group as dates may be changed.

LADIES’ LUNCH

I’m the member organizing the Ladies’Lunch. That means we usually meet once a month for a lunch in the surroundings of Lugano. And I try to find nice restaurants where we eat and have good company together.

MAHJONG

Do you like to play board games?  Why not try Mahjong?

About 17 years ago  we had an Australian lady in the Club who was passionate about this game. She brought all the equipment over here from Perth, West Australia and started up a Mahjong group.

Unfortunately she had to return home to Australia but a few of us still meet once a week to play this fascinating game – which is fun, challenging and interesting.

It is a game of Chinese origin, using small engraved tiles for tables of three to four players. We play the Western style (Chinese style is different) and meet every Thursday afternoon from 14.30 – 17.00 at the Hotel Pestalozzi. We celebrate Christmas, Chinese New Year and various other special occasions. You are very welcome to participate – please contact us for further information.

MOMS AND TOTS – Rocio Tauber

This activity is a joint programme of the International Women‘s Club of Lugano and the American Women of Ticino and is for moms with babies and toddlers and meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at group members‘ homes

MUSIC APPRECIATION – Renata Del Grande

I know that there are many of you out there who love music, concerts, opera, singing, concertos and all the other forms of musical entertainment that Lugano has to offer.

BUT how many times do you miss beautiful events because you didn’t know about them? OR how many times do you not go to wonderful concerts because you don’t want to go alone? AND how often would you like to find out about musical events that are taking place in our city which might appeal to you?

This is the group for you!! I want to create an informative, interactive group in which we can exchange news of upcoming events, find friends to go along to concerts with and a place to post reviews, comments and critiques.

Please sign up to this ‘Music Appreciation Group’ so that we can keep each other informed about all the musical events taking place in Lugano. I look forward to hearing from you, and I will get back to you soon with some ideas!

ROUND TABLE COFFEE

SUNDOWNER SPECIAL

Aperitivo Group. The idea is to meet up for a drink and a chat, not necessarily to eat anything, but just to get together in the evening – after work and before dinner.

WEBSITE PHOTOS

If anyone takes photos of a Club event, it would be great if they could send them to me so that they may be put on display on Dropbox of the IWCL.
